ETOPIA: Selling a Digital Dream
Producer, Editor and Marketing Director
This documentary follows one of the most prolific American New Religious Movements of the 20th Century, Heaven’s Gate. Through primary interviews with two of the last remaining members of the Cult, and preliminary investigation into the leadership culture of Heaven's Gate with Professor Dennis Tourish, we were able to trace the group’s promotional history - one which is acutely intertwined with the media. Following the lives of Ti (Bonnie Nettles) and Do (Marshall Applewhite), tracking their public promotional activities, we produced an accurate timeline of their rise to prominence. Perhaps the most historic movement by the Cult was the mass-suicide in 1997. Once again, they were prepared to promote this activity: press releases, recorded exit statements and even a published anthology materialised mere hours after the event. The film also explores the jewel in the Heaven’s Gate crown: their website. Maintained since 1997, it is a perfect time capsule of the 20th Century Sci-Fi craze. From our interview, we uncovered a hidden civil war in the aftermath of the mass-suicide - one which almost brought Heaven’s Gate to its knees.
